Wettermast Hamburg: Continuous measurement

Brümmer, Burghard; Lange, Ingo

Experiment
Summary
Continuous measurement of weather data since 1995 on several height levels
up to 250 m above the ground at the Wettermast Hamburg, a 300 m
broadcasting tower in Hamburg-Billwerder (Germany). Height levels are 2,
10, 50, 70, 110, 175, and 250 m. Temporal resolution is 1 minute for most
values, some are sampled in intervals of 5 or 10 minutes. The values are
grouped in logical devices, in most cases according to real devices (e. g.
ultra-sonic anemometers). Each device offers a variety of output values
(e. g. 3-dimensional wind and turbulence data). Major logical devices are
MINERVA which provides traditional meteorological measurement of pressure,
temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, irradiation, etc. Height
levels of temperature and humidity are 002, 010, 050, 070 (temp. only),
110, 175, 250. Height levels of wind are 010, 050, 110, 175, 250.
SONIChhh contains measurement data of wind and turbulence retreived from
ultra-sonic anemometers in height level hhh, based on 5 min-intervals.
Height levels are 010, 050, 110, 175, 250. BOEhhh contains extreme and
mean values of wind based on 1 min-intervals. CT25 is a ceilometer for
cloud level detection up to 7500 m. CT25B holds the complete backscatter
data of the ceilometer. IRSS is a device for rain detection and therefrom
derived rain duration. Some devices contain additional values calculated
from measured data like dew point (derived from air temperature and
relative humidity) and sunshine duration (derived from short-wave
irradiation). Note that only MINERVA measurement started in March 1995.
Other devices are installed successively in the following years (SONIC
in December 2001, BOE in April 2004).
