The project bm0081 has the following objectives:
a) Impact of model resolution (up to T106 horizontally and up to 39 layers) on the
systematic errors of the model. Experiments with prescribed observed
sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are planned to investigate the
resolution dependence of the mean state and variability on different
time scales. The model results will be compared to ECMWF and NCEP
reanalyses as well as satellite data.
b) Impact of SST variations on climate during the past century. A number of long-term simulations are
planned in the ensemble mode to study the relationships between
interannual and decadal SST variations and climatic anomalies (e.g.,
temperature and precipitation). These studies on potential
predictability will be performed at different resolutions. While
century long simulations will be performed at T42L19 resolution,
several higher resolution studies are planned for recent decades (T85-106, L19-L39).
