The AMOC and its sensitivity to different climate forcings in the range of glacial to modern conditions

Dataset
Summary
State-of-the-art coupled climate models produce very different states of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In particular, many of them fail to capture the shoaling of the North Atlantic Deep Water cell, which is indicated by paleo records. The cause for theses differences is not yet well understood. In this project, simulations with the Max Planck Earth System Model are used to improve this understanding by studying the sensitivity of the AMOC and the deep Atlantic water masses to different sets of forcings such as greenhouse gas concentrations and ice-sheet configurations.
The dataset contains two sets of simulations, one with prescribed LGM ice sheets (names begin with 'LGM') and one with prescribed preindustrial ice sheets (names begin with 'P'). Each simulation has a different CO2 concentration, indicated by the number in the name. E.g., the simulation "LGM149" has prescribed LGM ice sheets and a pCO2 of 149ppm. Sensitivity experiments are indicated by an underscore and an additional word: "_brine" indicates simulations in which the brine release in the Southern Ocean was reduced by 50%; "_glac" indicates simulations in which the LGM glacier mask was replaced by the preindustrial glacier mask; "_rest" indicates restoring of temperature and salinity in the deep South Atlantic to climatological values to prevent the northward propagation of signals from the Southern Ocean. There is one tar-file for each simulation. Within the tar-file there different types of post-processed output:
MPIOM
(1) climatologies and averages of the last 300 simulation years (2d,3d,moc)
(2) timeseries of 50-year averages (2d,3d,moc)
(3) timeseries of yearly averages (moc)
ECHAM
(4) climatologies and averages of the last 300 simulation years (BOT,ATM)
All four output types are provided for the simulations LGM149, LGMref, LGM230, LGM284, LGM353, P149, P185, P230, P256, P284 and P353. For P206, there are also all output types provided, but the climatologies are replaced composites of periods with a weak AMOC and composites of periods with a strong AMOC. For the sensitivity simulations, only some of the output is provided.
An additional tar-file contains two sets of restart files for each simulation. The first set is from the beginning of the respective simulation, the second set is from the end.
