MPI-M Earth System Modelling Framework: millennium land use change (best guess) experiment

Jungclaus, Johann

Experiment
Summary
The data represent 6-hourly, daily and monthly average values from the
land use change (buest guess) experiment for the MPI-M Millennium Project
(http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/en/wissenschaft/working-groups/millennium.html)
using the comprehensive MPI-M Earth System Model
ECHAM5/JSBACH/MPI-OM/HAMOCC including the biogeophysical and
biogeochemical effects of an interactive carbon cycle. This experiment
is similar to the mil0001 control experiment (see
http://cera-www.dkrz.de/WDCC/ui/Entry.jsp?acronym=mil0001) except that it uses a
time-dependent reconstruction of vegetation cover (land use).

The time-dependent vegetation cover was prescribed from buest guess
estimates of annual land use (J. Pongratz, C. Reick, T. Raddatz
and M. Claussen, 2008: A reconstruction of global agricultural areas and land cover
for the last millennium. Global Biogeochem. Cycles, in press), see
CERA experiment RECON_LAND_COVER_800-1992 for details
(http://cera-www.dkrz.de/WDCC/ui/Entry.jsp?acronym=RECON_LAND_COVER_800-1992).
The land cover maps 1993 to 2100 are a continuation of the land cover
reconstruction AD 800 to 1992 based on data from the IMAGE model that
was used for an update of the A1B scenario in the ENSEMBLES project. Using an
anomaly method, any areal changes in cropland or pasture as indicated
by the IMAGE maps were superimposed onto the map of 1992 (J. Pongratz,
E. Stehfest, C. Reick, M. Claussen).

Technical details:
The experiment used the following models/resolutions:
ECHAM5 (EH5) Version 5.4.01 at T31L19 resolution
JSBACH (JSB) at T31 resolution, one soil layer, 13 vegetation types
and four vegetation tiles per grid box
MPI-OM/HAMOCC Version 1.3.0 at GR3.0L40 resolution
