The Global Weather Experiment (GWE) also known as First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE) was an unprecedented effort driven by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and all national weather services. Its objectives were to provide initial and verifying conditions for predictability studies on synoptic and medium range forecasting. The German research vessel Meteor among 40 other ships took part in the experiment with an atmospheric observation program including 291 radiosondes. Region of operation was the central equatorial Atlantic Ocean.
